On Thursday, November 11, 2021, the talents of high school writers from five different Kaufman County High Schools came to life through words as 32 students wrote about “What a Veteran Is To Me”. The top three winners of the essay contest were announced at the Nov. 11 Veterans Day Ceremony at the Kaufman County Veterans Memorial Park and their winning and moving essays were read aloud.
The Winners: 1st place: Diovante Grant, a senior at Forney High School. 2nd place: Carlos Ramirez, a senior at Kaufman High School. 3rd place: Tyler Spitzer, a senior at Kemp Academy. Their essays as well as all of the 32 entries can be read by clicking HERE.
A very special thanks goes out to the American Legion Post 165 in Kaufman for donating the cash awards to the winners in the amounts of $500, $300, and $200 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. Also to Veteran Dallas Fox for organizing the contest and recruiting the judges who represented Veterans and members of the media. And finally, thank you to Robert Hunter, Kaufman County Veterans Services Officer for incorporating this contest into our very special Veterans Day Ceremony!
All of these students have a very special place in our hearts and we thank them all for sharing their talents, their emotions, and their willingness to share what a Veteran is to them.
