Fire Marshal Seeking Info on Suspect Who Caused Fires Near Kaufman

Three Fires Caused by Burning Trailer on Sunday, July 31Suspect Still At Large

Kaufman County, TX – Approximately nine homes along County Road 151, and 151A near the City of Kaufman were evacuated shortly after noon on Sunday, July 31 as a precaution as three separate fires broke out.  Witnesses reported that a vehicle pulling a burning trailer left a path of destruction behind before unlatching and abandoning the burning trailer on a bridge.

Kaufman County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie lifted the evacuation order at approximately 3 p.m. on Sunday and residents were allowed back into their homes. Firefighters from the City of Kaufman Fire Department and dozens of volunteer firefighters from the Crandall, Kemp, Scurry, Terrell, Mabank, College Mound, volunteer fire departments battled to defend the structures in that area for hours. Additional help from the Texas A&M Forest Service and CareFlight Emergency Medical Services was also present.

The fires remain under investigation as the Fire Marshal’s office and local law enforcement are searching for the alleged perpetrator. The burning trailer in question was reportedly unhitched from the lead vehicle pulling it and the suspect has fled the scene.
