Uncontrolled Burn Barrel Fire Results in Fatality

Local Online Media Report Mistakenly Cites Controlled Burn Fire Nearby for Death

Kaufman County, TX. – A Kaufman County man died Thursday, February 10 from injuries he sustained from a fire he started in a burn barrel behind his home north of Terrell, according to the Kaufman County Fire Marshal, Paul Ayres. Ayres said the victim, identified as Ricardo Zapata, 69 from Terrell, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Witnesses told Ayres that Mr. Zapata had started the fire in a barrel near his home, but the flames spread to dry grass and combustible materials stored nearby. No other injuries were reported.

Ayres also clarified that the fatality was unrelated to a control-burn fire that was being conducted just miles away in the Ables Springs area by the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department. Early reports from a local online media source mistakenly reported that the fatality was the result of the control-burn fire nearby being conducted by the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department. Those two fires were unrelated.
